How to Take Care of Your Skin During the Summer
When we think of summer, most of us are thinking about lounging on the beach or poolside, wearing our cute brand new bikini. It’s a time of year we show the most skin. So, don’t you think it’s the most important time to take care of that skin?
Sun protection is the most important, beneficial thing you can do for your skin. Sun damage is the leading cause for premature aging, fine lines, age spots, and let’s not forget skin cancer. UVA rays from the sun penetrate deep into the skin and are the major source of early aging and skin cancer. UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburns. Your sunscreen should be broad spectrum and have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
Diet is also an important component of skin care. A diet that’s high in antioxidants is super beneficial to your skin. Blueberries, green tea, pomegranate, and many nuts are all great sources of antioxidants. These are important to take internally as well as externally. Also important are your Omega-3 fatty acids. Mostly found in fish and nut oils, these fats support good skin health and cut down on inflammation. Water is another key source of great skin. Make sure you increase your fluid intake if you are more active or sweating more than usual.
Exfoliating is the secret for glowing skin. Dull skin is usually caused by dead skin cells sitting on top of skin surface. During the summer, sand, chlorine, and other factors increase dead skin cells. You should exfoliate two to three times a week. There are two types of exfoliation. Manual exfoliation consists of rubbing a loofah, sugar, pumice, salt crystals, or body scrub in circular motion. Chemical exfoliation involves the use of beta or alpha hydroxy acids (salicylic acid, citric acid, glycolic acid). These acids break down dead skin cells on the surface and allow them to be peeled or sloughed off.
Moisturizing is another ingredient is healthy and glowing skin. Though your skin may not be as dry in the summer as it was in winter, it is still important to moisturize. Pick a lighter moisturizer or lotion that is fast absorbing. Choose a scented lotion with coconut, mango, or pineapple for that great summery, tropical smell.
Shaving your legs was probably not on your priority list during the winter, but should be tops during the summer season. Make sure to pick a good quality razor that won’t cause nicks and cuts. And don’t pick just any shaving cream or bar soap. The best thing to use for shaving is a moisturizing shave lotion. Not only will it hydrate, but will help to ward off razor burn.
Don’t forget the feet, especially if you like to wear those cute strappy sandals. Make sure to follow the above steps and keep the toe nails trimmed and shaped. Accent those sandals with beachy or tropical colored nail polishes.
