How to Choose a Hairdresser

Choosing a hairdresser is a very personal decision. You want to choose a hairdresser who will listen to what you want and will make suggestions to you about your hair. A hairdresser should be able to tell their clients when a style will look good and when one will not be flattering; they should be honest about your hair style.

Talk to friends and co-workers; ask them where they get their hair done, if they like the way their hairdresser handles their hair. You should also ask if they are accepting new clients.

When choosing a hairdresser, ask them how long they have been doing hair. Find out what their experience is and if they have had any special training. Some hairdressers are not properly trained to do certain types of hair. If you have very curly hair, you want to choose someone who has experience in working with curly hair.

Some hairdressers may have a portfolio of their work, ask to see their work. Does their work only include certain hairstyles such as men only or women only? Does the hairdresser have experience with different cutting techinques? These are all important questions to ask.

Once you have selected a hairdresser, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment for just a style; a shampoo and blowdry. This will give you the opportunity to see how the hairdresser handles your hair. If you like the outcome, schedule a trim for the next visit.

If you frequently get chemical treatments such as color or perms, it is important to know if your hairdresser is comfortable doing these services. Ask them if they do many chemical services. If they do not, or don’t feel comfortable doing these services, then ask if another hairdresser in the salon is experienced with this type of work.

When choosing a hairdresser, look at their hair. You don’t want to choose a hairdresser who has damaged, dirty or poorly maintained hair. Is the hairdresser professional looking? Does the hairdresser have clean garments and do they clean up after each client?

When trying a new hairdresser it is important they pay attention to detail. Does she listen when you ask for just a trim, or does she cut the hair before instructions are given? A good hairdresser should stay focused on their client. They should not use the phone while working on a clients hair. Someone, such as a receptionist, should take a message stating that the hairdresser is busy with another client.

Make sure all license’s are up to date and current. Listen to what other customers are saying about a stylist you are interested in.

While you are sitting in the stylist’s chair, you should be the main attraction. You are paying for the stylist’s services and suggestions. It is also important to note that if you don’t like a suggestion given by a stylist or hairdresser they respect your decision and style or cut your hair as asked; a good stylist will always follow this rule.
